But to a certain extent, it feels like you might just be pressing a "mix this for me" button and the computer does the work for you. Hell, I know the RX stuff is absolute magic. I am sure some of these tools are pretty useful and do awesome things. Their website makes some pretty bold claims as far as the plugins communicating with each other to balance your mix correctly, etc. I don't see what you couldn't use it on just about any source material really. You get EQ, compression, DeEsser, and some other fancy stuff. It honestly looks like a pretty glorified channel strip to me. Nectar is described on their website as being for vocals. Ozone would seem to have it's processes geared towards this functionality. In mastering, EQ is typically used very sparingly, if at all, with very fine-tune adjustments.
Thus allowing you to eventually raise the overall level of the material without causing digital peaks and making your program material perceived as louder. Basically to reduce the loudness of peaks in your signal without giving too much effect to the signals in between the peaks.
So there may be some stuff different in the individual plugins than what I remember (I also don't remember Neutron being around, it seems new to me).Īs far as for mastering - typical use of dynamics processing leans much more towards extremely heavy compression ratios (limiters). Mastering is typically a term used pretty exclusive to music (not really in post), Mixing is used in both worlds, but in the context of these plugins, they are most likely referring to music.įYI - my experience with the izotope plugins is from quite a while back as far as versions go. What's the difference between the three programs? If one were to use them in conjunction with one another, what's the best practice? Do you do the mixing first on a track, and then do the mastering (with Ozone) on the master bus? I'll greatly appreciate any advice. It's not clear to me from any of the online documentation what is the best case use for these things, especially because most of what's written about them deals with music production, not podcasts which are just dialogue. With the said I'm a bit taken back by Neutron, Ozone, and Nectar: my understanding is that Ozone is for mastering, Neutron is for mixing, and Nectar is for. I do the podcast with each person on a separate track so I can EQ them and handle problems individually. I've used RX for basic audio cleanup (I basically put each voice track through voice de-noise and mouth de-click, and sometimes use the main RX program to clean up specific areas). However, I'm a bit confused on which izotope products to use.
